The government has set a target of planting more than 71.14 million fruit tree seedlings across 35,570 public and private primary schools as part of this year’s Mazingira Day celebrations.
Environment Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa said the initiative aims to instill a culture of environmental responsibility among young learners while enhancing food security and community livelihoods.
“This year’s Mazingira Day will be marked under the theme “Citizen centric tree growing and environmental stewardship”. It is a call to action for every Kenyan to take personal responsibility for restoring the environment,” CS Barasa said.
She announced that the national celebrations, scheduled for Friday, October 10, will be led by President William Ruto, with Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and heads of state agencies expected to participate in tree planting and cleanup exercises at their former primary schools.
“We are inviting every Kenyan to go back to their former primary school to donate and plant a fruit tree and clean the school environment. Our schools are the foundation of our nation, the place where our dreams are first planted,” she said.
According to Barasa, each school is expected to plant at least 2,000 fruit trees, while additional seedlings will be distributed for planting in surrounding communities.“The choice of fruit trees this year is intentional. Fruit trees are life-giving, they feed, they shade, and they sustain. They provide nourishment for our children, income for schools, families, women, and youth,” she said.
