Kenya is urging increased investment in green jobs, technical skills, and practical innovations as African nations navigate the transition toward a low-carbon economy. Speaking on the shift, Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary Dr. Festus Ng’eno highlighted the need for African countries to move beyond policy discussions and translate climate commitments into concrete investments. He emphasized that actionable solutions are essential to build economic resilience and create employment, noting that Kenya will continue working with partners to align environmental sustainability with job creation.
Part of this broader environmental agenda includes strengthening policy frameworks for Kenya's tree seed systems to support the country's national target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032. Technical analyses and stakeholder consultations across the restoration sector have identified key policy priorities, including explicit recognition of native tree species, clearer institutional roles, better sector coordination, and enhanced communication between seed collectors, nurseries, and tree growers. Practical efforts underpinning this policy shift are active in areas such as the Seed Savers Network Training Centre near Lake Elementeita and the Maasai Mau indigenous forest, which serves as a major source of high-quality tree seeds.
Grassroots innovation from young researchers is also emerging to combat severe climate impacts across Kenya's arid regions. At the 9th Young Scientists Kenya Exhibition, students from Northern Kenya earned the competition's top overall awards. First Place Overall went to Hafsa Ibrahim Adan and Asha Harun Yarow from Senior Chief Adano Girls Day Secondary School in Wajir County for their artificial intelligence-driven environmental monitoring and drought risk prediction system. Designed for climate-vulnerable communities in North Eastern Kenya, the early-warning system allows farmers and local residents to manage scarce water supplies, adjust irrigation, and protect crops and livestock before severe drought sets in.
The exhibition's Second Place Overall was awarded to Halima Aila Mohamed, Sake Hussein Tadicha, and Manal Mohamed from Zad Muslim School in Marsabit County for "Eco-Guard," an automated smart garden system designed to address local arid conditions and food security challenges. Eco-Guard utilizes a protected greenhouse structure equipped with automated watering and temperature control. A soil-moisture sensor triggers a water pump when the soil dries and shuts off once sufficient moisture is reached, while a temperature sensor automatically opens the greenhouse roof when heat exceeds set limits.
In addition to technological developments, community- and faith-based movements are driving environmental engagement across the country. Through the Catholic climate movement Laudato Si', young activists are leading local education and conservation projects. At St. Ignatius Parish in the Diocese of Ngong, 25-year-old Brian Chacha organizes tree planting drives, environmental cleanups, and community discussions on clean energy and recycling, promoting creation care as an ongoing responsibility.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s private sector is aligning commercial strategy with environmental goals. Standard Chartered Bank Kenya has expanded its sustainable-finance portfolio, mobilizing over KSh97 billion since 2021 for projects in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, affordable housing, and women-led enterprises. In the aviation industry, discussions surrounding sustainable aviation fuel are gaining traction to mitigate sector emissions. According to estimates from Kenya Airways, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport consumes approximately 2.9 million litres of jet fuel daily, highlighting the significant potential impact of proposed sustainable fuel refining initiatives.
