
A recent nationwide ecosystem assessment has provided the first complete evaluation of Kenya's rangelands, revealing a sobering picture of shrinking grasslands and worsening land degradation driven by climate pressures and invasive species.
According to the assessment, Kenya’s grasslands are facing severe stress as invasive plant species continue to spread and droughts recur with greater frequency and intensity. The reduced recovery time between prolonged dry spells has left vast pasturelands struggling to regenerate, jeopardizing the fragile ecological balance and the traditional livelihoods of local livestock keepers.
In northern Kenya’s Marsabit County, the consequences of these combined environmental pressures are particularly visible around the Chalbi desert. Satellite records dating back to 1990 show a steady transformation of grasslands into barren ground across the area. Projections indicate that if current trends continue without intervention, the Chalbi desert could double in size within decades.
The projected expansion of arid ground poses a direct threat to essential pastures that generations of pastoralist communities have relied upon for survival. Key livestock areas across northern Kenya, including Turkana, depend heavily on these contiguous rangelands to sustain cattle grazing and local economies.
The evaluation highlights how localized environmental disasters can compound ecological degradation over broad geographic regions, undermining land productivity and livelihoods far beyond initial boundaries. Environmental researchers note that obtaining a complete picture of rangeland condition through nationwide assessments is vital for managing pasture health and mitigating the ongoing impacts of severe climate events.
