Kenya's Wasini Coastline Blooms With Restored Seagrass Beds | Resurgent Africa

Seagrass, the Earth's only flowering plants capable of living under the sea, sustain the lives of innumerable aquatic organisms. But off the coast in Kenya's Wasini, destructive fishing practices alongside the impact of climate change, destroyed most of the seagrass meadows. However, a community-based approach is reviving the seagrass. As a result, the marine life forms that disappeared after the destruction of seagrass, are also seeing a wave of revival. The community in the area is bustling with the economic dividends that the increased fishing catches have brought to them. The Wasini Beach Management Unit (BMU) members also promote safe and sustainable fishing practices that further ensure the sustainability of seagrass meadows.
