Four Pillars of Green Growth
The Green Growth Index is built around 80 indicators, including 47 indicators aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
These indicators are organized into four main pillars that provide a broad assessment of Kenya's green economic transition.
Efficient and Sustainable Resource Use examines how efficiently the country uses materials and energy while assessing efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Natural Capital Protection focuses on the conservation of ecosystems, biodiversity and land resources.
Green Economic Opportunities measures the country's capacity to generate green investments, expand green trade and promote innovation.
Social Inclusion assesses equitable access to essential services, gender equality and broader social equity. [Sources: Policy Commons – Green Growth Index Summary Report · GGGI Green Growth Index Conceptual Framework]
Strong Performance in Social Inclusion and Natural Capital
The assessment identified social inclusion and natural capital protection among Kenya's stronger areas.
Kenya's performance has been supported by established environmental and development policies, as well as the country's significant integration of renewable energy into its electricity system. Geothermal and hydropower resources have played an important role in Kenya's transition towards cleaner energy. [Sources: Kenya Climate Directory · GGGI Kenya]
Kenya's renewable energy progress has also been recognized in assessments of the country's climate policies and actions. [Source: Climate Action Tracker – Kenya]
Gaps in Green Innovation and Investment
Despite its strengths, the index highlighted significant weaknesses in areas such as green innovation, green trade and targeted financial investment.
The findings point to the need for greater private-sector participation and increased investment in technologies and businesses capable of driving the country's green economic transformation. [Sources: Kenya Climate Directory · County254]
Closing these gaps could help Kenya move beyond its current moderate performance by strengthening the financing, innovation and commercial opportunities available within the green economy.
Supporting Kenya's Long-Term Development Goals
Beyond measuring performance, the Green Growth Index is intended to serve as an evidence-based tracking tool for Kenya's development priorities.
The index is designed to support implementation and monitoring of Kenya Vision 2030 and the Green Economy Strategy and Implementation Plan (GESIP) by providing data that can help policymakers identify areas of progress and sectors requiring additional intervention. The inaugural score of 47.95 therefore provides a baseline against which Kenya can measure future progress as it seeks to build an economy that combines economic development, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.
A Baseline for Future Green Growth
The release of the Green Growth Index marks an important step in measuring Kenya's transition towards a greener economy.
While the country's performance shows notable strengths in social inclusion, natural capital protection and renewable energy, the findings also highlight the need for stronger green innovation, trade and investment.
As Kenya pursues its long-term development goals, the index could provide policymakers, investors and other stakeholders with a consistent framework for tracking whether the country's green growth ambitions are translating into measurable economic and environmental outcomes.
